Betula pumila is a deciduous shrub which grows over much of northern North America, from Yukon to Newfoundland, south to northern California, Colorado, the Lower Great Lakes, and New England (Map). It occurs in bogs, swamps, mineral fens, muskegs, and riparian zones; 0-700 m. Bog Birch reaches 1-4 m in height. The bark is reddish-brown, smooth. The leaves are elliptic, coarsely dentate; 2-5 cm. The catkins are erect, 0.8-1.5 cm long. The fruit is a winged samara. B. pumila flowers in late spring.
